Blended Learning

Today we learn about blended learning. It’s about combining both traditional face to face learning and e-learning. By blending those elements, hopefully we can learn more effective and efficient. But it still has some weaknesses such as the availability of the technologies, student and teacher ability to use it, etc.

The blended classroom is designed to meet the individual needs of student by allowing teachers to personalize instruction.  This strategy can be used for any subject and any grade level.  Blended learning combines face-to-face and online instruction. It allows students to work with teachers in school and have online resources at home. It is similar to the flipped classroom, but with more emphasis on in-class work with the teacher over video/home content. Project Based Learning is a type of blended classroom. Students work on projects at home, and in class. In class, they can ask the teacher for help, and continue on the project at home, with online materials for help. By having online materials available, students have access to support when out of the classroom. (http://olecommunity.com/blended-learning-what-is-it-and-why-is-it-trending-in-k-12-education/)

Ways technology supports the strategy
  • resources are posted online via class website, LMS (Edmodo, Google Classroom, Schoology, etc). Resources include articles, videos, interactive multimedia, virtual labs, and more
  • Teachers can track which students are using materials at home
  • online materials are available to students anytime, anywhere
  • materials are accessible to parents and specialists to assist the students
  • provides interactive activities, support materials and learning resources
  • multimedia content helps address different learning styles

The majority of blended-learning programs resemble one of four models: Rotation, Flex, A La Carte, and Enriched Virtual.
·         Rotation model
a course or subject in which students rotate on a fixed schedule or at the teacher’s discretion between learning modalities, at least one of which is online learning
·         Flex model
a course or subject in which online learning is the backbone of student learning, even if it directs students to offline activities at times. Students move on an individually customized, fluid schedule among learning modalities.
·         A La Carte model
a course that a student takes entirely online to accompany other experiences that the student is having at a brick-and-mortar school or learning center
·         Enriched Virtual model
a course or subject in which students have required face-to-face learning sessions with their teacher of record and then are free to complete their remaining coursework remote from the face-to-face teacher.
Pros:
  • Provides for individualized support for the students
  • students can access material at anytime, anywhere, to review the material
  • provides richer, more interactive learning experiences
  • provides more time for collaboration with the students and teachers
  • parents have access to what students are doing - better communication and support
  • studies show it increases student and teacher productivity, improves teaching and learning, and provides more and better data, and helps customize learning.
  • more and more colleges and even workplaces are using this model
  • gives students more time to learn - extends the learning beyond the end of the school day

Cons:
  • Teachers will need time to create and/or select content.
  • Teachers will need training on using this method of instruction to make it effective
  • students will need to be shown how to access, use the technology and what is expected of them
  • Students need to be able to do work outside of school hours
    • do they have access to technology at home?
    • do they have access to internet at home?
    • do they have other things that take up their time (job, etc.)
    • students need to be self-directed to work at home

E-learning

Today we learn about e-learning, a kind of learning activity using electronic media as the medium of learning. the most common media for e-learning are computer and internet, but sometimes CD or DVD are also available.

The purpose of e-learning is to allow people to learn for personal accomplishment or to earn a professional degree, without physically attending a traditional university or academic setting. E-learning can be applied for all levels of schooling from grade school to graduate degrees, and is versatile enough to accommodate all learning styles. http://www.ehow.com/about_4788168_what-purpose-elearning.html

There are some advantages and disadvantages of e-learning show+n in the table below

http://www.optimussourcing.com/learninghintsandtips/the-advantages-and-disadvantages-of-elearning

as the conclusion, through e-learning we can learn more effective and efficient based on those advantages of it. however it still has some weaknesses such as lack of control, isolated, computer competency, and others.

CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning)

CALL
Call (computer assisted language learning) is a language learning process using computer to help them to improve their language skill ability.

Types of CALL Programs
1.       CALL-specific software: applications designed to develop and facilitate language learning, such as CD-ROMs, web-based interactive language learning exercises/quizzes (see CD-ROM examples for language learning)

Types of CALL Programs
(http://www2.nkfust.edu.tw/~emchen/CALL/unit1.htm#program)

  1.   Generic software: applications designed for general purposes, such as word-processors (Word),  presentation software (PowerPoint, see an e-book made by students "Many Moons"), and spreadsheet (Excel), that can be used to support language learning (see examples of using Excel for language learning & teaching)  *Also see Microsoft Office Online Templates)
  2. Web-based learning programs: online dictionaries, online encyclopedias, online concordances, news/magazine sites, e-texts, web-quests, web publishing, blog, wiki, etc.
  3.  Computer-mediated communication (CMC) programs: synchronous - online chat; asynchronous - email, discussion forum, message board

Roles of the Computer in language learning and teaching:
1.       tutor for language drills or skill practice
2.       a tool for writing, presenting, and researching
3.       medium of global communication

Principles of Using and Designing CALL Programs in Language Learning and Teaching
(http://www2.nkfust.edu.tw/~emchen/CALL/unit1.htm#principles )
        - student/learner-centeredness (to promote learner autonomy)
        - meaningful purpose
        - comprehensive input
        - sufficient level of stimulation (cognitively and affectively)
        - multiple modalities (to support various learning styles and strategies)
        - high level of interaction (human-machine and human-human)

Multimedia Project
(http://constructivisminelt.wikispaces.com/Constructivism+and+CALL)
Project work is a rich form of task-based learning which is one of the forms of a constructivist approach (Henderson 2011).
Multimedia projects practice skills such as e-collaboration (between the students within their project group), e-investigation (using browser and search tools), e-writing and presentation skills.
In order to successfully manage projects in the classroom, Henderson suggests remembering the following:
•Clearly define the task, its aims and benefits
•Get the students to engage in the project by letting them choose the topic of their interest
•Have a clear timetable in order to work in conjunction with the main course syllabus
In multimedia project preparation a variety of multimedia sources and tools should be used, such as Web 2.0 technologies and presentation programmes (Windows Movie Maker, Microsoft PowerPoint, Google Docs).

Class blog
(http://constructivisminelt.wikispaces.com/Constructivism+and+CALL)
Through social interactions mediated by language, edublogs offer students the opportunity to surface their ideas and comment on them, which enables the learners to participate in the
social constructivism of knowledge through individually-led gradual process.
A class blog can also facilitate the collaborative construction of knowledge, similarly to a class wiki site.

ICT ROLES IN EDUCATION

today Mr Hartono gives us some websites to be read. after reading the materials about the

role of ICT in education, we can conclude that ICT has very big usage in education,

espescially English language teaching and learning.

ICT makes the teaching and learning easier, the teacher can use their laptop to explain /

to present the materials through LCD projector. so they don't need to write in

blackboard/white board much make them more efficient.

the students also can use the ICT facilities for their learning activity. the can study the

lesson through their Laptop or their smart phone so they don't need to spend much money for

buying books. they also can use it for doing their assignments.

the more interesting, there is an ICT facility names internet. internet is a kind of

computer networking in a very large area across nation that enable the user to access many

information they need. so the teacher and the students can get many information from many

sources around the world from internet to explore their knowledge, skill and ability.

However, there still some people who is lack abilities in using ICT technology so they

cannot get the maximal benefits from it. but its not a big problem if they want to try hard

for mastering ICT, they can master it quickly because ICT is not too difficult to be

applied. the other prolem is the people can access manythyng from internet-good things and

bad things, so we must be careful in using it in order to minimize the bad effect of it.

lets become a wise user.

Management information system (MIS)

Hello guys, this is my first assignments in ICT Language Teaching with Mr. Hartono. today we have learn about
1. Management information system (MIS)
2. Hypertext
3. Hypermedia
4. Multimedia

Mr. Hartono provides us with many useful resources from many sources to make us understand the materials well.
1. Management information system (MIS)
It is about how the people manage the technologies around them for helping their activity become easier. for example a bussinesman can use his/her smartphone to have many links for his bussines, the teacher can use the laptop and proyector for teacing in the classroom, the students use their android for doing the tasks, and many others.

2. Hypertext
Hypertext is a text in the website that have a relation to another sites when we click it.

3. Hypermedia
Hypermedia is a set of hypertext which can be added by pictures, audios, videos, hyperlinks and many interesting utilities.

4. Multimedia
Multimedia is a kind of media in our gadget (smartphone, laptop, notebook, tablet, etc) that can provide us many interesting features such as photos edittor, music player, video player, and many others.

all of these facilities are very useful for our life because it can serve many of our needs. but they also can be very dangerous if we cannot manage them well. so let's become a wise user of media.
